As many of you know, last summer Toronto activist Anita Krajnc was arrested and charged with criminal mischief after giving water to a pig inside a truck bound for a slaughterhouse. Video of the alleged crime shows pigs on the lower deck of the truck panting and Anita reaching in to give one water from a bottle while the truck is stopped at a traffic light in Burlington, Ontario. It shows the driver getting out and telling Anita not to put water in the truck. She responds by quoting Jesus: “If they are thirsty, give them water.” The driver replies, “You know what? These are not humans, you dumb frickin’ broad.”
Anita is a co-founder of the nonprofit Toronto Pig Save, whose members bear witness to animals arriving for slaughter, often stopping trucks and giving water to thirsty pigs. She says offering water to a thirsty pig is an act of compassion. “It is not only a right, but a duty we all share. Causing the pigs to suffer in the first place is what is wrong. I face these criminal charges with dignity, knowing that truth and justice are on my side.”
She faces up to 6 months in prison and a $5,000 fine.
Anita’s trial begins August 24, and in a show of solidarity, activists will be gathering for a vigil outside the Ontario Court of Justice courthouse at 8:30 am on the 24th and 25th: 2051 Plains Rd E, Burlington, Ontario L7R 5A5.

I am shocked at this situation what on earth is the matter with those in authority, all this lady did was show great compassion and give a pig a bit of water. So why on earth would she be prosecuted sorry I don’t get it. You can shoot a person and get away with it but you get done for providing a drop of water to an animal. This proves without a doubt that this asylum called earth is being run by the lunatics.

I thought Canada was a civilized country. This is unbelievable. I can understand how there may be cruelty and apathy in a third world country like India where I come from, and I can totally understand how the police ignore pleas of animal welfare activists. But to think that a country actually has laws against giving water to thirsty animals puts things in a whole new perspective. And it is irrelevant that they were going for slaughter.
What I found faintly hopeful in all this was the response of the truck driver. It is possible that he actually believes that pigs don’t get thirsty or don’t need water or is generally very vague about how animals may have feelings or any kind.
I have personally seen people like this who underwent dramatic transformations (relative to where they were – they did not become Gandhi) once they realized, for example, that they could afford a simple act of mercy like killing a fish first before chopping off its fins in the process of making it ready for a customer at the market.
Hope this turns out to be a similar case someday.
Best wishes for Anita.
